Girls soccer wins emotional playoff game

Girls Soccer continued their playoff run with a 1-0 win at Magruder in the second round of the state playoffs in an anything but normal game.

Forward Kat Barth returned to the field after missing the first round playoff game against Gaithersburg with a broken toe.

Both teams began the game nervous due to the added intensity of the win or go home scenario. However, Both teams settled into the game and after about ten minutes the Vikes and Colonels attempted to execute their game plans.

Midway through the first half, the Lady Vikes got on the scoreboard first when forward Lucy Arledge slipped a through ball to winger Tessa Morrison who finished the play.

The Lady Vikes, up a goal on an awful field, looked to continue their attacking against a Colonel defense that let up more than 32 goals during the regular season. However, the Colonels stepped up and defended all attacks by the Lady Vikes.

As the second half began, Magruder pushed players forward in hopes of tying the game, but goalie Hannah Sasscer and defender Emily Mason held strong and didn’t allow the Colonels to have an open shot at the goal.

With thirteen minutes remaining in the game, tragedy struck the bleachers when a man suffered a heart attack during the game. Paramedics arrived and the game was postponed until the next afternoon.

The Lady Vikes returned to Magruder and thwarted off all pressure in the final thirteen minutes for an emotional win.

The girls travel to Churchill on Nov 5 for the regional semi-finals as they look for revenge after losing 3-0 during the regular season.
