OFF! turns it on

Keith Morris, founder of punk bands Black Flag and Circle Jerks, burst back on the punk scene with his new band OFF!. Their first album, “The First Four EP’s,” is a perfect example of why Keith Morris was one of the most highly demanded punk vocalists of the ’80s.

Clocking in at 17.5 minutes, the album’s 16 energy-filled tracks go by quickly, to say the least. An all-star band including bassist Red Kross, Steven Shane Mcdonald and guitarist Dimitri Coats accompany Morris.

Even though the album is extremely short, the songs hit with an unforgettable punch. Morris croons his way through each blistering track as if it were his last.

The album’s production is almost identical to Black Flag’s 1979 debut, “Nervous Breakdown.” Morris and the band go by simple rules, one of which dictates that “the first take is the final take.”

None of the songs reach the two minute mark so it’s difficult to pick favorites, but Morris’ signature howl is most prominent on “Upside Down” and “F*** People,” two songs about the frustrations of everyday life.

The album artwork, created by Raymond Pettibon, Black Flag’s original artist, is a bit disturbing and rough at times, but it adds to OFF!’s punk energy.

Morris and his band seem every bit as upset with society now as they were in 1979. It’s nice to see that some artists stay constant no matter the decade.
