Students should lose the laziness to cut the clutter

It seems safe to say that practically everyone selected “strongly disagree” on the online survey about Whitman’s cleanliness.

There’ve been many complaints about hallways covered with trash after lunch, yet students still haven’t shown any considerable improvement. There are plenty of garbage cans and recycling bins lining the first floor hallways, so students have no excuse for leaving trash on the floor. It seems like, even though everyone hates garbage, they love their teenage apathy more.

It’s the job of the janitors to make the school building as clean as possible, but when they have to spend most of their time picking up after lazy students, other parts of the school, like the revolting bathrooms, consequently suffer.

The bathrooms are simply disgusting. Mostly due to student laziness, toilets often go unflushed and wet paper towels lie on the floor inches from the trashcan. If students took the two extra seconds of effort necessary to leave the bathroom the way it was when they came in, everyone would benefit.

Students just need to make this minimal effort, both in the bathrooms and the hallways, to ensure a cleaner school.

Administrators have already taken steps to make the school a cleaner place in general. For example, there are large bottles of hand sanitizer in almost every room and regular PA announcements reminding students to pick up after themselves.

Nonetheless, there are still many improvements that could better the school’s hygiene. Everyone should exert a greater effort to make the school a better, cleaner place. After all, we do have to stay here at least seven hours a day, five days a week.

I agree. I sit with a group of people who do usually pick up their trash…but not all of it. They rush off in an attempt not to be late to class, and in their wake leave an empty chip bag, cheez-it crumbs, a beverage not quite finished. Guys, it doesn’t take that long to bend over, pick something up and throw it away as you’re heading to class. You can spare a few seconds. Really. I know–my class is on the third floor.
