Whitman won four categories of Bethesda Magazine’s “2011 Best of” issue, which ranks top restaurants, doctors, schools and other services in the region, as voted by the magazine’s readers.
The magazine named Whitman best public high school for sports teams, drama and music. Whitman also won the category for “If You Want Your Kid to go to Harvard.” Pyle also won “Best Middle School,” and Burning Tree won “Best Elementary School.”
Students’ SAT scores, participation in AP classes, and theater and music performances were among the school’s successes the magazine cited. Bethesda Magazine also commended Whitman’s relationship with the News Literacy Project and the athletic department’s emphasis on quality coaching and teamwork.
“It’s no secret that Walt Whitman students are highly motivated,” Bethesda Magazine wrote in their January 2011 issue. “But the learning—and student accomplishments—also occur outside the classroom. Parents and students regularly applaud Whitman’s drama and music productions.”
Principal Alan Goodwin appreciates the community’s support in nominating Whitman.
“Since this is a recognition that comes from the surrounding community, it’s pleasing to know that they appreciate and have noticed our fine sports and drama programs,” he said. “We’re fortunate to be in a school where students have high academic achievement.”
Goodwin is glad Bethesda Magazine recognizes schools for their positive achievements.
“It’s wonderful that the magazine promotes such recognition because usually we only make the news for bad things that happen,” he said.
In past years, the magazine has recognized Whitman teachers, and Goodwin won “Best Principal” last year, he said.
Runners-up for the categories Whitman won include B-CC, Churchill, Walter Johnson, and Wilson.
