Mobile sports app provide users with on-the-go information

Sports applications for your mobile phone/iPod touch are currently on the rise in the electronic world. Whether you’re checking the scores for your favorite team, following up on various news reports or making sure you’re winning in your fantasy league, mobile sports apps are the way to go. They’re especially useful if you need to kill some time and catch up on the latest news. Here are the top five mobile sports apps that you can download for free:

Yahoo's most popular app, Sportstacular, is the best overall program for your mobile phone or iPod touch. Photo courtesy Yahoo.com.

1. Yahoo! Sportacular—This is the most practical sports app you can download. It contains many features that show all current news articles, scores, standings and statistics for any team in any sport. It has a special feature in which you can pick the winners for any current game and receive points for every correct prediction. However, the application crashes very frequently and needs an update to fix its only flaw.

2. MyFantasyTeams—If you’re away from your computer and have no idea how your fantasy team is doing, then you should download this app. It’s one of the few free apps that allows you to track and follow your fantasy teams from Yahoo leagues in any sport. With fantasy football and basketball becoming more popular everyday, this app is especially useful because you can make changes to your rosters.

3. ESPN ScoreCenter—This is ESPN’s official mobile app. It provides users with minute-to-minute score alerts for games of all sports. It also features myTeams, which allows

users to select specific teams and follow them in depth. There are no real flaws to this app, but it should have more unique features considering it’s sponsored by ESPN. For example, it could provide a way for ESPN fantasy league users to track their teams and alter their line-ups.

4. ESPN Passport—This is another ESPN produced app that is more creative and unique. In addition to following your favorite teams, you can view and share photos from games and upload your own directly to the app. You also have the option to comment on specific games you are following and can have conversations with other avid fans.

5. Ski & Snow Report—If you are a die-hard skier and not a fan of football, basketball, baseball or other sports, then this is the perfect app for you. There are a variety of features that let you locate nearby ski areas, view live ski cams, read first-hand ski reports and track the powder point (amount of snowfall) for each slope. This is a perfect app if you’re planning on going on the school-sponsored Breckenridge ski trip.
