Girls tennis opens season strong

Varsity girls tennis defeated the Wootton Patriots 5-2  Sept. 13, bringing its record to 3-0.

After dominating their first two matches, the Vikings went up against the 1-1 Patriots. Number one singles player Sarah Macy lost in two sets with a score of 0-6 and 1-6.

After falling short in their first sets, each doubles pair came back in the second set. Pairs Rachel Sisco and Rachel Arnesen, Haley Johnson and Grace Chandler and Leah Osnos and Whitney Cinkala went into a third set.

Sisco and Arnesen won their third set as well as Osnos and Cinkala. However, Johnson and Chandler couldn’t overcome the Patriot’s strong doubles pair.

Single players Anna Volkav and Nicole Welch both went into a third set, and after lengthy volleys and intense shots, they each defeated their opponents.

“This win gave me a lot of confidence,” Welch says, “Coming back from the second set makes me feels a lot better about myself and my playing.”

The girls will play the Rockville rams on Sept. 16 on the road.
