Local attractions offer students a way to stay fit over summer break

Summertime brings students countless SSL opportunities and tan lines. But along with taking in sunshine and enjoying free time, you can take advantage of several fitness options.

Rather than wandering around Bethesda on a nice day, consider biking to Georgetown. The Capital Crescent Trail makes this trek easy with a seven-mile flat path starting at the Bethesda Ave. and Woodmont Ave. intersection and ending in the heart of Georgetown on the Potomac River. Enjoy the scenery by the canal, but be careful of the Lance Armstrong-style bikers who forget to warn you when they pass on your left.

Another scenic way to spend a sunny day is the Billy Goat Trail. No matter your style, there is a trail for you, whether you want to stride slight steps or scale almost completely vertical rock formations. Enjoy a rest stop on the rocks or the shady beaches on the river. You can access the trail at the entrance across from the Old Angler’s Inn on MacArthur Blvd.

If you enjoy a more meditative form of exercise, yoga is for you. Treat yourself to your first week free at Down Dog Yoga on Elm Street above Haagen-Dazs. Yoga is a great way to increase flexibility over the hot summer months, and Down Dog’s classes are open to all levels and provide a break from exhausting workouts.

Instead of relying only on running to keep in shape, this summer try a more exciting alternative with some friends. These substitutes will be sure to keep you entertained during lulls in your schedule.
