Throwing trash away is usually an uneventful process, but now students will have the opportunity to admire an assortment of unique trash cans in the media center, with designs ranging from clouds in the sky to flowers budding in the grass.
Media specialist Ginny Trulio created the “Art is Everywhere” display of twelve trash cans, known as “Art Cans,” designed by art teacher Jean Diamond’s students. She placed the cans behind the library circulation desk in hopes of adding to the attractiveness and cleanliness of the media center. The trash cans will be arranged throughout the center once students return for second semester.
“I think wherever there is art you really warm up the environment, so to me it is a win-win,” Diamond said. “You can’t lose by having more art around.”
Although Diamond didn’t set many rules for the project, she did restrict students from using words, encouraged them to design the cans to blend with the environment and promoted universal designs with no generational trends.
“They all made their own choices,” Diamond said. “There was not one singular theme.”
Senior Cara Fried participated in the project because she is always looking for new artistic experiences. She designed two trash cans: one with a giant mouth and the other with a sky.
“I wanted to focus on color because the project was about taking something dull and making it interesting,” Fried said.
Diamond said the goal of the trash cans was combining form and function.
Since the display has begun, Diamond has received many compliments from students and teachers on the trashcans, she said.
After completing this project, Diamond hopes to create personalized trash cans for every classroom. She suggested designing the trash cans based on the subjects taught.
“It would be really awesome if it was a gift to each teacher’s classroom and they [the students] collaborated with the teacher and said what would they like to see on their ‘Art Can,’” she said.
