Ice hockey snagged their first win of the season Friday night, crushing the Sherwood Warriors 9–2 with a strong offensive showing.
The Vikes dominated the first period, with five goals scored in combination by centers Ben Barrett and Jay Silver, forward Joey Schaefer, and defenseman Mark Meinecke, who contributed two.
“Everybody battled hard,” Meinecke said. “People were driving the net, getting shots and going after rebounds. Puck control down low was also very good, which definitely helped offensively.”
Defenseman Marc Shulman said Silver’s goal came off an impressive play.
“He sniped the top left corner from the far right after [dekeing] past the goalie,” Shulman said.
The Vikings only managed one goal in the second period, however: a shot by forward Tyler Crist found the back of the net nine minutes in.
The third period saw more action for both teams. It started with a goal from forward Julian Robinson that was shortly followed by two goals from the Warriors, the second goal 11 seconds after the first.
“A few of their good players got lucky,” Shulman said. “It was disappointing, but mistakes were made and we learned from them.”
The Vikes retaliated with goals from forwards Justin Baker and Carter Hughes to end the game.
The team, now 1–1–2 on the season, takes on crosstown rival B-CC (2–1) Friday night at 8:15 at Cabin John Ice Rink.
