The ice hockey team tied Walter Johnson 3–3 in a back-and-forth match. After the match, while collecting their gear in the locker room, the team discovered that many of their wallets were missing money, some of them up to $150.
“We then contacted the ice rink, which is currently reviewing their security tapes and also filed a police report,” forward Joseph Tseytlin said. “As of now we don’t know anything more about who did it.”
During the game, the teams played relatively even in the first period and finished 1–1, thanks to forward Matthew Noenickx’s score off an assist from forward Justin Baker. Soon after, the Wildcats retaliated with a goal of their own.
The Vikes came out on top of the second period, in which defenseman Tiger Bjornlund nailed a buzzer-beater with 1.3 seconds left, taking the score to 2–1.
The third period was more challenging for the Vikings, and despite forward Joey Schaefer’s early goal, the Wildcats were able to secure a tie, ending in a goal with just over a minute left in the game.
Tseytlin said said that penalties in the third period took a toll on the team’s performance.
“We were disappointed that we were not able to hold the lead at the end and ended up only getting a tie,” Tseytlin said. “It felt as if we should have won the game.”
The previous week, the team lost their first regular season game, falling 7–0 to last year’s state champion Churchill Bulldogs.
The Vikes were wary going into the game, knowing it would be a difficult matchup.
“Attitude wise, we were a little uncomfortable because they have such a fan following and they are the best in the state,” center Martin Torrey said.
Although the Vikings had their moments throughout the game, the Bulldogs’ dominating offense took advantage of their opportunities past the defensive line, scoring three goals in the first and second periods, one in each during power plays, and one goal in the third.
“We were definitely playing better in the third than the first or second,” goalie Matt Derry said. “But by and large Churchill outplayed from puck drop to the end.”
The third game of the season will take place next Friday at 7:25 at the Rockville Ice Arena, when the Vikings face off with the Wootton Patriots.
