The girls tennis team placed second overall in the county tournament with a heartbreaking 21–20 loss to the Wootton Patriots on Thursday.
It came down to the final afternoon, where third doubles combo Emily Zitner and Brooke Mcleod faced Wootton, with the winner of the match determining the county champions.
Zitner and Mcleod fought hard, but lost in a tight three-set match 4–6, 7–6, 4–6.
The team had already played Wootton on September 18, where Zitner and Mcleod beat Wootton’s third doubles team to give the Vikes a 4–3 victory.
Third singles player Olivia Meyers and second doubles combo Miranda Tompkins and Mizuki Honada both won their brackets. Fourth singles player Emily Myers also had a strong showing, making it all the way to the finals of her bracket.
First singles player Carina Greenberg and second singles player Sarinah Wahl both made it far in their tough brackets, but both lost in quarterfinals.
Coach Jasen Gohn was thrilled to have the opportunity to coach this squad.
“This group is very positive,” Gohn said. “They made going to practice fun every day.”
