The girls soccer team advanced to 9–0 Friday, beating the National Cathedral Eagles 2–0 at home.
The game marked the first time all season that the Vikes weren’t able to get on the scoreboard during the first half, despite multiple shots from midfielders Kristen Bissell and Kate Morrison and forwards Olivia Lobsenz, Mary Dimitrov and Caroline Macdonald. Key scorer forward Abby Meyers sat out with a toe injury.
The girls improved over the course of the second half, however, and Macdonald credited their success to an increase in cohesiveness.
“We combined better,” she said, “and had better passes.”
17 minutes in, Macdonald took a shot from the left side that crossed into the goal. It was followed two minutes later by a goal from Bissell after she dribbled around an Eagle defender for a close shot.
As opposed to the Vikings’ county opponents, the Eagles’ style of play was more physical, possibly causing the scoreless first half.
“They were a lot more aggressive than the other teams,” Macdonald said.
The girls will take on the Churchill Bulldogs this Monday (7–1–1) at 5:15.
