Girls tennis had an incredible week, crushing their opponents in every match to improve their season record to 11–0. The team took down Einstein, B-CC, WJ and Magruder 7–0, 6–1, 5–2 and 7–0 respectively.
In first match of the week, the girls made quick work of the Einstein Titans, winning every matchup in two sets and in many cases 6–0, 6–0.
The next match, against the B-CC Barons, proved to be more competitive as first singles player Carina Greenberg faced a top-tier opponent, losing 2–6, 5–7. Only a few weeks before, she faced the same opponent at the U-16 Maryland State Championship, where she fell 4–6, 4–6.
“It was difficult especially because I lost to her before,” Greenberg said. “I came in with the mindset to improve from the last time and make her play.”
Despite losing the first singles slot, the team dominated in this match, handily defeating the Barons in all of the other slots.
Although the WJ Wildcats are in Divison II, they were one of the most competitive teams the girls faced all year—Thursday’s score was 5–2 in the Vikes’ favor.
Most of the wins in the match were captured in straight sets, and the two losses were hard-fought and close.
Friday afternoon was both a dominant and special match for the Vikes: they swept the Magruder Colonels 7–0, and on the team’s senior night. Seniors Anna Marcus, Emily Meyers, Juliette Lawler and Miranda Tompkins all started, and the team won every match in straight sets.
The Vikes will host the Churchill Bulldogs in their final match of the season Tuesday at 3:30. This match will determine if the Vikes walk away with a perfect season, a feat not accomplished since 2011.
