The field hockey team dominated their rival Walter Johnson Wildcats 2–0 Monday night, improving their record to 3–1 on the season.
The Vikes got on the board quickly when forward Zara Memon scored 8 minutes into the game. Memon slung a shot to the upper right corner that flew past the goalie.
Memon scored another goal just a few minutes before half, off of a deep pass from forward Ellie Gill over the heads of Wildcat defenders.
Memon credited her teammates carrying the ball down the field for her two goals.
“[They’re] very skilled and were able to take the ball down the field, keeping the opposition on edge,” Memon said.
Forward Elsa Bjornlund had a couple close shots on goal later in the game, almost padding Whitman’s lead.
But that extra insurance was not needed—the Vike defense was stellar. Goalie Cami Stenger shut down any scoring opportunity for the opposition.
The Vikings were able to take advantage of the wet, sloppy conditions by keeping their pace up with the ball.
“The ball was able to move much faster across the field, so we could have much quicker passes,” Memon said.
The team will host the 2–2 Richard Montgomery Rockets Friday night at 7:15.
