The girls soccer team trounced the Quince Orchard Cougars 6–0 in their home opener Tuesday night, bringing them to 2–0 for the season.
The first goal came 11 minutes into the game, when forward Abby Meyers took a shot at the upper corner of the goal and the ball sailed past the the Cougars goalie into the net.
The second goal played out similarly nine minutes later, as midfielder Ellie Harris drove the ball down the side of the field for a direct pass to Meyers, whose shot flew out of the goalie’s reach.
To complement the team’s offensive showing, the Vikes’ defense stopped all opposition.
Defender Cristina Valianatos had an impressive stop, sweeping the ball out of the goal box when one of the Cougar’s shots bounced off goalkeeper Nikki Lane.
By the time time the score reached 5–0, thanks to two goals from forward Mary Dimitrov and one from forward Caroline Macdonald, coach Herbert sent in goalie Sophia Tompkins as a forward. This actually proved beneficial to the Vikings, however, as Tompkins ended up scoring with one minute left on the clock.
Though Tompkins is used to being in the goal, she said scoring was a nice change.
“It was a good cross,” she said, “and I finished well with my right foot.”
Next Monday, the girls will travel to B-CC at 7:15 to face the Barons, also 2–0, for the first annual “Battle of Bethesda” tournament to raise money for the cause Soccer Without Borders.
