The boys tennis team’s season came to an end Saturday, with doubles team Jack Welch and Andrew Leung falling 6–7, 7–5, 2–6 to B-CC in state finals after making an incredible regional run. Additionally, the mixed doubles team Oscar Levine and Sarinah Wahl had a strong performance, as they placed third in the regional qualifying tournament but were unable to reach states.
Welch and Leung easily defeated many opponents they faced in straight sets throughout the regional and state tournament. In the state quarterfinals, the two pulled off an upset over the top seed from River Hill, 7–5, 6–4.
They had already faced the B-CC team in the finals of the regional tournament, where Welch and Leung triumphed 6–4, 6–0.
“Jack and I developed a huge bond throughout the tournament,” said Leung. “That’s what pushed us all the way to the finals.”
Levine and Wahl were a good doubles pair, but since only the top two teams from each region qualify for states, they failed to make the cut.
The Vikes will look to go even farther in next year’s playoffs, since the team will still have many talented returning underclassmen.
