The boys tennis team came up with a huge win Thursday afternoon, beating the rival B-CC Barons 4–3.
The win came after a close 4–3 loss yesterday to Churchill, in which the Vikes had lost their first match in nearly two years.
“We had a sour taste in our mouth after yesterday’s loss,” head coach Jasen Gohn said. “To come through today was huge because it means we still have a share of the Division I title.”
The team found themselves in a similar situation to their last contest, being tied with B-CC 3–3 with one match still remaining. Freshman second singles player Andrew Leung, who came back for today’s match despite suffering an ankle injury, made the difference.
Leung hung on to win the deciding match 6–3, 3–6, 7–5, fighting off five match points in the final set clinching the victory.
The squad had another great performance from first singles player Jack Welch, who won his match 6–2, 7–5. They also picked up big wins from freshman third singles player Liam Rotzoll, and third doubles combo Mauricio Gottret and Will Caudron.
Gohn hopes that this week’s difficult matchups will prepare the team for the rest of the season.
“B-CC is a strong team. The fact that we beat them gives us the confidence to beat anybody,” he said.
The Vikes are now 5–1 on the season and play away tomorrow against the Northwood Gladiators.
