The boys basketball team overcame a slow offensive start to earn their first win of the season against the Rockville Rams 51-42.
The Vikings trailed 24-21 at the half, but outscored the Rams 16-7 in the third quarter to take the lead.
“We had to wake ourselves up at halftime,” center Max Oppenheim said. “In the second half we really worked on our man-to-man defense, which gave Rockville fits.”
Oppenheim had a dominant game for the Vikings, filling the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. He went 9-10 from the free throw line.
Center Anton Casey also added to Vikings success in the paint, scoring 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds.
On a positive note, the Vikings had 12 turnovers, five less than their season opener against Georgetown Prep.
“We were able to limit our turnovers which eliminated fast break and easy baskets,” Oppenheim said. “Overall we really stepped our intensity up this game as opposed to our first game.”
Forwards Shaq Diboti-Lobe and Riley Shaver also combined to score 17 points in the win.
The Vikings will have an opportunity to get over .500 this Friday when they take on the 0-3 Landon Bears at Landon.
