You don’t have to be classy to do battle. Or BATtle that is. This year, in an epic showdown between the seniors (Batman), juniors (Spider Man), sophomores (Superman), and freshmen (Incredible Hulk), all four grades fought against each other for two hours for pride and glory.
Battle of Classes included musical chairs, an obstacle course, and four-square dodgeball, among other fun activities. The Freshman expected to lose, Freshman team member Jeylan Ulusan said. Ulusan was encouraged to try out by many upperclassmen including her sister, junior class officer Selvi Ulusan.
Although the freshman lost, they put up a fierce fight, even beating the seniors in dizzy bat basketball.
The crowd was electric with the classic cheers of “Go back to Pyle” and “It’s your bedtime” being hurled at the underclassmen, followed by shouts of “We won’t miss you” directed at the seniors.
Everyone hollered themselves hoarse, for the competition was fierce. Members of the SGA and other enthusiastic students worked all night to keep people energized and cheering for their class.
Sophomore Kieran Kindig was one of many students dressed up for their class theme.
“They said I had the jawline of Superman, so they wanted me to come out and help cheer for the sophomore class,” Kindig said.
Other spirited costume wearers included senior Batman Jonny Rasch, junior Spider Man Trevor Lystad, and senior Joker Maxi Okon.
But really, let’s talk about the only thing that matters: Guy Poms. Led by senior Poms Casey Mason, Louise Amat, and Georgia Philbin, the 33 Guy Poms sported their bright pink shirts (if you could even call them shirts after they were brutally cut short) and helped lead the Seniors to a glorious win by distracting other grades during events.
Of course Battle of the Classes wouldn’t be complete without a little friendly competition, and the air in the gym was thick with tension (and sweat). As always, the seniors and juniors fought for their lives.
“The juniors totally won,” junior team member Carli Riibner said. “They just rigged it for the seniors. Even though the juniors rock it’s okay because we’ll win when we’re seniors”.
Everyone on all four teams competed aggressively, but of course, there can only be one winner. As SGA President Matt Banda called the seniors’ obvious victory, seniors rushed onto the basketball court with everyone screaming and cheering.
“My favorite part was the amazing school spirit,” Banda said. “I’ve never seen a BOTC quite like this one.”
Seniors fought hard against the other grades to prove themselves champions, including team member Jessica McManus.
“I loved showing all of the classes who’s boss,” she said.
Battle of the Classes was a valiant fight and all the grades struggled until the end of the epic battle. Celebration spilled out into the parking lot where heros and civilians alike took to their cars and flew away into the night.
