Get out your pocket Constitution, everyone—today’s Constitution Day!
Established in 2004, this obscure commemoration recognizes the Sept. 17, 1787 signing of the Constitution. It’s also known as Citizenship Day, and special naturalization ceremonies occur nationwide.
Part of the bill that established Constitution Day requires schools that receive federal funding to celebrate with a Constitution-related educational program. I didn’t hear about “We the People” in history, English or math class, but we at The Black & White are never ones to shirk our patriotic duty. So here’s a constitutional fun fact:
The Constitution wasn’t actually written by any of the Founding Fathers. In fact, the man who transcribed the document was Jacob Shallus, a Pennsylvania clerk. He made a few mistakes—only reasonable, considering the document’s four thousand-some words.
He was paid $30 for his services, or approximately $775 today.
