The girls lacrosse team captured the 4A/3A West region title after handily defeating the Wootton Patriots 16-7, advancing to the state semi-finals.
The Vikings controlled play early in the game and never trailed. The ball was in the Patriot half of the field for most of the match-up, as the Vikings were able to turn face-offs and ground balls into goals.
The key to Vikings’ strong play was their depth, coach Katie Bitonti said.
“We never need to rely on one single player to get the job done—they all work really well together as a unit,” she said.
The Vikes led 7-3 at halftime, but didn’t let up in the second half, adding nine more goals to ensure victory.
According to midfielder Kendall Wiss, the win signifies the program’s development and commitment to teamwork.
“The program has grown so much in the last few years,” she said. “We know each other’s strengths and help each other out.”
Midfielders Jenna Hosker and Maddie Parker both scored four goals, and attacker Hannah Ginsky and midfielder Annabelle Scully scored twice.
The 13-2 Vikings will face Severna Park, the top seed in the East region, in the state semi-finals.
With a chance to play for spot in the state finals, hard work has paid off for the Lady Vikes, Wiss said.
“We all just wanted it so badly, and getting this far has proved we are a great team,” she said.
