Northwood and Northwest High Schools were both evacuated today after receiving bomb threats.
In two separate incidents, Northwood HS in Silver Spring and Northwest HS in Germantown both evacuated students and staff after anonymous callers called 911 threatening bomb and other violence against the school.
The school learned of the threat at about 9:20 a.m., Northwood principal Mildred Charley-Greene said in a message appearing on the school’s website. Students evacuated shortly afterwards as police arrived to search the buildings. After a complete search, the police cleared the two schools, and students were back in class by noon.
County press releases repeatedly stressed that the evacuation was “an abundance of caution.”
“We’ve received threats before,” MCPS spokesperson Gboyinde Onijala said in a phone interview.
The police investigation into the source of the threats is ongoing.
