The boys tennis team defeated the Wootton Patriots, 4-3, for the first time in five years on Friday, improving its record to 5-0 on the season.
The Patriots have been one of the toughest teams in the county for the past few years, winning the county championship two years in a row.
The team secured wins in the first, third and fourth singles spots by Aries Wong, Jack Welch and Lucas Schoch respectively and then a fourth win in the first doubles spot by partners Tyler Jacobson and David Bloch.
Wong, the team’s strongest player, defeated his opponent easily in the first match of the afternoon, however, fellow senior Sean Ngo lost his match, making the score 1-1. Despite a loss by Ngo, one of the team’s strongest players, the Vikes bounced back and won the next three matches.
This was the biggest match of the season for the Vikes, who are now the favorites to win the county championship instead of the Patriots.
“It was awesome to be able to beat them at home with a great turnout of fans supporting us,” fourth singles player Lucas Schoch said. “The Wootton match gives us a lot of confidence and momentum right before our second biggest match of the season against Churchill on Monday.”
