The girls basketball team defeated the Blair Blazers in a thrilling 41-40 victory to advance to the third round of the playoffs.
The Vikes stole the ball from the Blazers with a minute and 20 seconds left on the clock when forward Marie Hatch hit two clutch free throws to go up 41-38. The Blazers would then score on the ensuing possession, leaving the game at a close 41-40 score.
With 12 seconds left, the Vikes turned the ball over on a backcourt violation and the remaining possession belonged to the Blazers. However, characteristic of their entire season, the Vikes were able to stop Blair’s drive and secure the victory.
They were led in scoring by Hatch who registered 12 points on four field goals. Guard Abby Meyers also heavily contributed to the team with 10 points of her own.
The game was close throughout its entirety with a great team effort put in by each player.
“I think the entire team rallied together,” forward Avery Witt said. “It was a really close game and Blair played hard and we just came together to pull off the win.”
The team also continued to rely heavily on defense and held a strong offensive Blair team to only 40 points.
The Lady Vikes will face the Kennedy Cavaliers at home tomorrow in the third round of the playoffs and look to advance to the regional finals.
