The Lady Vikes defeated the Poolesville Falcons, 51-40, for its twelth straight victory this season.
Guard Nicole Fleck had an explosive performance from beyond the arc, registering five three-pointers and one free-throw to end with a season high of 16 points. Fleck scored 10 of her 16 points in the first quarter alone, propelling the team to victory from the moment they stepped on the court.
Forward Abby Meyers, who is currently a freshman, is striving half way through this season. In last night’s match-up, Meyers registered 13 points. In four out of the five previous games, Meyers has scored in double digits.
The Vikes came out strong scoring 18 points in the first quarter, leading the Falcons for the rest of the game.
Forward Avery Witt credits the win to the usual powerful defensive effort.
“We came out really strong and played very aggressive, solid defense,” Witt said.
The team held the Falcons to only 20 points in the first half and allowed only eight more in the third quarter.
Leading by 17 in the fourth quarter, the Falcons were able to come within seven points, however, Meyers hit a one-and-one shot to expand the lead back up to 10 and to seal the game.
Witt said the team will look to build on the aggressiveness it showed in last night’s game.
“We are going to continue to work on being aggressive both offensively and defensively,” Witt said. “We also need to work on finishing just as strong as we begin the game.”
The team is now 13-2 overall and will try to stay undefeated heading into the playoffs. It currently looks like a strong favorite for its conference at 5-0.
The team will face the 8-7 Churchill Bulldogs at home next Tuesday and will look for its thirteenth straight win.
