The boys soccer team defeated the Kennedy Cavaliers, 3-2, in a penalty shootout in its first match of the playoffs.
The Vikes started off well with an early goal scored by forward Davey Mason in his first game back from an injury.
Starting forward Emmanuel Kanneh also scored a goal to tie the game at 2-2.
Back-up goalie Evan Cameron’s number was called due to the injury of starting goalie Ian Atkinson. Cameron came up big in his first playoff game start and had the game-winning save in penalty kicks.
The Vikes went three for three in penalties with goals scored by Emmanuel Kanneh, Lucas Knight and Vegas Kastberg while the Cavaliers went zero for three.
The boys are optimistic about the playoffs, but still think there is room for improvement.
“It’s always good to get that first playoff win,” defenseman Jeff Rosenberg said. “However, we’re going to need to keep improving throughout the playoffs.”
The team will move on to the regional semifinals and play the winner of the Churchill-Richard Montgomery game next Tuesday. The Vikes beat Churchill 2-1 but lost to Richard Montgomery, 1-0, in both of their regular season meetings with these teams.
