The main gym vibrated with screams and stomps from students of all grades for almost two hours, dying down only as the rules for each event were announced by MC’s Kate Goldberg and SGA president Jorge Richardson. Battle of the Classes brought the ruckus, displaying an enormous amount of school spirit and pride. By the end of the battle, the seniors emerged as champions.
“Everyone was really happy about it,” said Mark Norris, who is the head of the BOTC committee for the SGA. “Everyone seemed really enthusiastic, and everything went off pretty much without problems.”
The night was nearly flawless for a reason–planning for the games had been going on “pretty much since the beginning of the year,” Norris said. “The Roar video did take away a lot of our time, but we really stepped up these two weeks getting everything organized.”
The seniors had a strong start on the obstacle course, defeating the freshman and ultimately the juniors as well. When one piece of the course was knocked over, resulting in the juniors having to do jumping jacks, the seniors surged ahead to secure their win in the final round.
After a rousing round of “Dizzy Bat,” a new game where competitors spun around 10 times and attempted a free throw, the games moved on to musical chairs, which got pretty physical toward the end.
“I like musical chairs because I get to push people,” senior team member Harriet Symmington said.
The seniors pulled out a win, wrestling junior Nick Panlibuton off of the remaining chair at the last second.
In the middle of the heated competition, the games temporarily stopped for an energetic halftime performance from the Guy Poms, which aroused cheers and standing ovations from students.
“The performance was very tasty,” senior Jake Zeisel said. “I was impressed with not only the whole group but also with myself. Good for us.”
The juniors earned a big win in the final and most intense competition– tug-of-war– against both the sophomores and later the seniors, causing the entire junior cheering section to rush onto the gym floor in celebration.
“It was really exciting to flood the court and, no pun intended, I felt like our class was really close,” BOTC committee member Rachel Ordan said.
Symington agreed that the event was a bonding experience.
“For me, that’s when senior year really hit me,” Symington said. “Tonight.”
