Now that the summer is over, leaves are falling and pumpkins are ready to be carved. Crispy, golden, and covered in cinnamon sugar: these apple turnovers are perfect to kickstart the brisk Autumn weather.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon grated orange zest
- 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
- 3 Granny Smith apples
- 3 tablespoons dried cranberries
- 6 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoons nutmeg
- Pinch kosher salt
- 2 prepackaged puff pastry sheets
- 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water
Directions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees and allow pastry sheets to defrost.
- Peel, core and dice apples. Zest and juice oranges and combine in bowl to prevent apples from oxidizing.
- Combine dried cranberries, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, flour and salt with apples and orange zest.
- Beat 1 egg with water and set aside.
- Cut pastry sheets into 8 squares. Cut 2 slits in each square to allow steam to escape from turnovers.
- Brush edges of each pastry square with egg wash. Add 1 scoop of apple mixture to the square.
- Fold pastry diagonally, press edges with a fork and brush the tops of the turnovers with egg wash. Garnish with cinnamon sugar. Place onto baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake pastries for 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool, and serve with extra apple mixture on the side.
