One year ago yesterday, Henrik Lundqvist and the New York Rangers ended the season for Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals in a decisive game seven at Madison Square Garden. This year, the roles are reversed. The Caps have home ice for game seven, and have their own established playoff stalwart in Braden Holtby.
As has become the norm with a Caps-Rangers series, five of the six games so far have been decided by one goal. The story of the series has been the questionable penalty differential, with the Rangers receiving 26 power plays to the Caps 14. With the mounting frustration over penalties and lengthy goal droughts from the teams’ stars, Ovechkin and Rick Nash, something has got to give tonight. The game starts at 8, and I will be here the whole time to provide my take on the action.
10:38pm: Rangers win Game 7 two years in a row. All in all a good season for the Caps. There was a time when they were given no shot of even making the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Caps won’t see a puck drop until October of next season. This is Shannon Dawe (Shan Man) and Nick Sobel (Sobes) signing off. Goodnight, Washington.
10:32pm: Can’t New York pull Lundqvist just for kicks?
10:23pm: Incredible save. Lundqvist is my pick for the Vezzina Trophy. 58 saves in a row is just unreal.
10:21pm: I just want to hear that siren one more time this season.
10:14pm: Mats Zuccarello dekes from backhand to forehand to practically walk the puck into the net. Holtby was reaching for a fly on his ear while Zuccarello waltzed around him for the goal. 5-0 Rangers.
10:12pm: Ovechkin with 14 hits…maybe he should hit the puck into the net. 14 of those would be nice.
10:08pm: Just 13 seconds into the third period, Rangers Captain Ryan Callahan nets his first goal of the playoffs to extend the lead to 4-0. Braden Holtby has been solid all year but he’s got to give the Caps more of a chance. Now the Rangers head to the power play…this just goes from bad to worse.
10:02pm: These Capitals look like the 2-8-1 team from the beginning of the year. With 20 minutes left in the game, the Capitals have nothing to lose. Up in Boston the Bruins have pulled off a miracle comeback with an overtime goal to stun the Toronto Maple Leafs, Wow.
9:52pm: The Bruins scored three goals in 10 minutes to force overtime against a hot goalie in James Reimer. There is still hope for the Caps’ season.
9:43pm: Lundqvist with 26 saves through two. I guess there’s a reason they call Henrik “King of the Crease.”
9:39pm: At this point, Washington just needs to get as many pucks on net as possible.
9:34pm: Meanwhile in Boston, the Bruins have come back from a three goal deficit in the third period to tie the game at four with 55 seconds remaining. People are running back to the arena from the parking lot. Is the same possible here in D.C.?
9:26pm: Verizon Center is silent. If the Rangers can do this in the first half of the game, the Caps can do the same in the second.
9:18pm: Michael Del Zotto scores against Washington. 3-0 Rangers and looking very grim. Two bad bounces in a row, this is not fun to watch.
9:14pm: Holtyby beaten glove side again by a rebound from Dorsett to Pyatt…the caps D needs to pick it up and help him out. 2-0 Rangers.
9:09pm: Caps start second period on a brief power play…not much they can do in 20 seconds.
8:48pm: CAPS POWER PLAY! AT LONG LAST! Ouch-that looked painful for Matt Hendricks but lets all salute him for the sacrifice. Period one ends on a great note for the caps.
8:45pm: Lundqvist is roosting on that puck like its a golden egg. Holtby almost cost the caps a second goal with his play behind the net.
8:37pm: Quick counter-attack by Aaron Asham after a Mike Green breakaway. Beats Holtby over his glove for the game’s first goal. 1-0 Rangers.
8:35pm: Blatant roughing after the whistle. The Caps still can’t get a break from the refs after having no power plays in game 6.
8:32pm: Great play by 19-year old rookie Tom Wilson in front of the net. He’s looking strong considering this is his third ever NHL game.
8:29pm: Ovechkin with two huge hits. The fans are going crazy!!
8:27pm: Steve Oleksy with a nice move. Henceforth he will be referred to as binky– his nickname based on sucking a pacifier until age 7.
8:18pm: Ovechkin has 28 shots and one goal. I’m calling an ovech-trick tonight.
8:15pm: Early chance on a good play for Washington. Carlson stopped by Lundqvist. Holtby up .001 on save percentage, you mad Lundqvist?
8:10pm: Puck Drop-Joe B and Locker on the call. They’ll try to call it straight but gotta love the hometown bias.
