Varsity ice hockey lost 4-2 to Glenelg high school in the state finals, Feb. 22 in heartbreaking fashion.
Glenelg struck first just 24 seconds in to the game, gaining early momentum. From then until the end of the second, the game remained deadlocked at 1-0. Early in the second though a Viking shot trickled past the goalie and was less than a foot from going in before it was knocked away.
With 3:53 left in the second period, Glenelg scored again extending its lead to two, but just 17 seconds later, forward Zack Wolfe opened the scoring for the Vikes on a wrap around shot that brought the team within one.
Soon after, all momentum the Vikes had was put aside as the referees decided to take the ice break mid-period when they needed to fix the boards on the Whitman side, opposite the bench. Glenelg scored again soon after play resumed.
With two minutes left in the game and down by two, the Viking coaches decided to pull the goalie. This move paid off just one minute later when the team scored and brought the game within one, but due to the open goal, Glenelg scored again immediately after off of the faceoff to lock up the victory.
This was the first time that Whitman has ever made a state championship for hockey, and although they lost they still had an extremely successful season.

Also, “recent memory”?
It’s in the club’s entire history

Stop using the photo from last year’s 2nd round playoff game; there is a site with all the hockey photos on it:
