The boys soccer team continued its winning streak with a 1-0 victory against the 0-1 Clarksburg Coyotes Sept. 10, advancing its record to 3-0.
Although both teams thrived off of possession, the Vikings dominated on offense with forwards Olivier Petermann and Davey Mason making effective runs and sending threatening balls into the penalty box.
Anchored by center defenders Yuta Nakagawa and Jorge Richardson, the defensive line consistently shut down Clarksburg’s offense.
“Our defense did a great job of keeping everyone organized and on track,” defender Edward Smith said. “I don’t think it was our best game, though, and we need to work on finishing a lot more.”
After 22 minutes of testing Clarksburg’s goalie, midfielder Andrew Wagman slid a ball through the Coyote’s defense to forward Luke Barber, who scored the first and only goal of the game.
At the start of the second half, Clarksburg immediately started putting pressure on the Vikes, forcing goalie Mark Cameron to make several crucial saves to preserve the team’s second shut-out of the season.
While Wagman and midfielder Grant Miller controlled the center of the field, captain and defensive midfielder Spencer Mestcher was aggressive in the air, allowing the Vikings to dominate possession throughout the rest of the game.
The team looks to protect its undefeated record on the road against the 0-1 Poolesville Falcons Sept. 13.
