The Defense Intelligence Agency is leading efforts to repurpose the former National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency base in Bethesda as a campus for multiple intelligence agencies. The DIA is working with the Army Corps of Engineers on the $300 million project. The plans are a part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Resolution, which recommends shutting down 22 major military bases and resizing 33 others.
NGA Employees vacated the old site in September. Eventually, all D.C. area employees will be consolidated at a new facility in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The intelligence campus will accommodate about 3000 employees, roughly the same as the old site.
Though many residents of nearby neighborhoods said the plans don’t concern them, a few voiced concerns about the possibility the plans might affect the surrounding community.
“Traffic is a concern, if many people come and go during construction,” said Betty Kay Kindred, a parent who lives near the old NGA site. “Noise from the construction could be annoying as well. I’d definitely like to get more details about the plans.”
