Bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz speaks to creative writing class

Melissa de la Cruz, “New York Times” and “USA Today” best-selling author, spoke to teacher Susan Buckingham’s seventh period creative writing class Oct. 11 about her experiences as writer in the real world and the importance of pursing one’s passions.

Cruz, who has worked as a fashion and beauty editor and has written for “The New York Times” and “Teen Vogue,” is the author of many award-winning teen novels including “The Au Pairs” and “Blue Bloods” series. Cruz is also the author of numerous books for adults.

“It’s important for creative writers to hear from people who have succeeded in the field,” Buckingham said.

Cruz explained that she decided to chase her childhood dream of becoming a writer, despite seeing many people she knew give up on their own writing dreams.

Many students, including junior Molly Moriarty, found Cruz’s story inspiring.

“Cruz showed that if you really want something in your life, you have to go for it, regardless of what people say,” Moriarty said.

Buckingham said she also believes Cruz’s story was meaningful by presenting another perspective on writing.

“It’s nice to get professional writers in because they always have a different take on writing,” she said.

Cruz’s presentation helped students understand how to make writing their career and what life as an author is like.

“It gave me a look at what it was like to be a writer in the real world,” Moriarty said. “It showed me that it’s not easy to get to the top, but in the end, it’s all worth it.”
