Senior Ashley Sobhani received a $100,000 dollar donation last week for her club, “The Afghanistan School Project,” which promotes education for girls in Afghanistan.
The check came from an organization called the Azerbaijan American Alliance, a group that was looking for a way to get involved with American humanitarian efforts, while also supporting a place they had a direct relation to. Sobhani heard of the organization from Hafiz Pashayev, a family friend and former ambassador from Azerbaijan. To receive the money, Sobhani went through a lengthy process with the organization.
“What made this whole thing come together is that in Afghanistan, there are Azerbaijani troops, so it was a way for Azerbaijan to get involved with the schools there,” Sobhani said. “Education is always a way to break the ice between countries.”
The check was made out to Walt Whitman HS, but the money will be funneled through to the State Department, who will then find a reputable organization to run the project.
“This check will hopefully build ten schools,” Sobhani said.
