Top 5 iPhone apps for sports fan

The iPhone, with its thousands of apps, has revolutionized the way we follow sports. Instead of waiting the next day to read the local sports section, sports fans now have instant access to all their favorite teams.  Here are the top five apps any sports fanatic should have:

1. ESPN Scorecenter (Free)

Scorecenter is the ultimate app for sports fans on the go, providing scores and updates from every sport.  You can customize the app to view your favorite teams’ scores and receive text messages whenever there’s an important event in your team’s game.

2. WatchESPN (Free)

ESPN’s latest remarkable app, WatchESPN, allows you to view any program currently airing on ESPN or any ESPN affiliate.  ESPN carries thousands of games each year in addition to carrying Sportscenter, so WatchESPN is a must-have.  One drawback: You won’t be able to watch any of the shows if your television provider hasn’t yet signed a deal with ESPN.

3. MLB At Bat ($14.99)

If you are even a casual fan of the national pastime, this app is a must-have, despite its high price.  The app regularly updates with video highlights of the important plays in every game, and the Gameday Audio feature allows you to listen to every MLB game live. Plus, if you have a subscription to MLB.tv, the app allows you to watch every game live on your iPhone.  If you don’t want to pay $15 for the app, a lite version is available with just the box score and no video or audio highlights. MLB blacks out all in-market games, though, so if you want to watch your hometown team play, you won’t be able to do it on this app.

4. SI.com (Free)

If you want more than just the game scores, SI.com is a great app for you.  This app allows you to access all Sports Illustrated content from the magazine, as well as podcasts and videos posted to their website.  Sports Illustrated has been one of the premier sports magazines in the country since 1954, and for a behind-the-scenes look at your favorite sports, this app is perfect.

5. ESPN Radio ($2.99)

ESPN makes its third appearance on this list, and for good reason.  The ESPN Radio app allows you to listen to everything on ESPN Radio from over 15 stations across the country.  This app includes not only excellent sports news and analysis shows, but also coverage of games from major sports leagues. This app is great for the avid sports fan who can’t spend time watching a show but still wants to catch up on his or her favorite teams.
