It’s the board that combines speed, danger, thrill and fun. Long boarding is similar to skateboarding with only a few differences; skateboarding is more trick-oriented while long boarding is used for cruising around.
Long boarding can be dangerous because it only takes a little bump at these high speeds to toss the rider onto the pavement. Despite the dangers, many Whitman students use long boards for getting from place to place, for fun and for the thrill of bombing down a hill.
Eddie Jones, a well-known long boarder at Whitman, decided to share an afternoon boarding on one of his favorite hills with the Spectator. On the way to the hill, Jones took a terrible spill and cracked his skull. Amidst my pleas to take him home or to a hospital, Jones assured me that he was fine and that he wanted to keep boarding. Despite the blood loss and cuts all over his back, Jones took to the hill to shred like never before.
