The Vikings softball team survived a close game against Richard Montgomery on April 26, defeating the Rockets 8-7 in extra innings to bring their record to 6-2-1.
Outfielder Shannon Ishimoto and sophomore Sam Gonzales both provided tremendous defensive play to help the team pick up the win.
Captain Sarah Macy led the Vikes offensively, churning out a big hit early in the game to give them the lead.
In the sixth inning, the team surrendered the lead once again and was forced to come back and tie the game 7-7 in the seventh inning, sending the game to extra innings.
In extras, it was all about the Vikings, who shut out the Rockets thanks to exceptional pitching from Ali Rhode. They managed to score a run that clinched the win.
Head coach Anne O’Donaghue attributes the team’s victory to its perseverance.
“It was a really tough game and we hadn’t practiced over spring break, but the best thing that we did was not give up,” she said. “We had let go of the lead late in the game and we had to rally in the seventh inning to tie and send it in to extras.”
The Vikes hope to improve their record on April 28 when they play at Churchill.
