Student performers wow audience at ‘Classical Me’

Continuing the concert series from last year, 13 students performed pieces from artists like Frank Sinatra and musicals like Phantom of the Opera in the first annual ‘Classical Me’ Feb. 8.

All of the students performed impeccably making an hour and a half feel like 20 minutes. The night began with one of the concert’s highlights: senior Heather Menefee’s dramatic rendition of an Italian opera, which demonstrated her strong vocals and acting abilities. It was a great way to set the bar high for the rest of the night.

The next performance was truly great. Junior Gabe Slesinger’s trumpet and piano ensemble changed the tone of the night from dramatic and emotional to soft and moving.

Following Slesinger, junior Elena Aragon sang her own rendition of Phantom of the Opera’s “Think of Me.” The song choice showcased her vocal skills and created a pleasing performance.

Another talented student was senior James Bell on the viola, playing a famous Bach melody. By the end of his act, the audience wanted more.

The night’s most impressive piece was senior Clara McCreery’s 20 minute violin performance. Even though it was the longest of the night, she kept the audience captivated with constant changes of pace.

By the end of the night, it was clear how hard all the students worked to show music that’s underexposed in this era.
