The track and field team competed at the MPSSAA 4A West Region Championships from May 12 to 13 at Clarksburg High School. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams placed eighth out of 12 teams. The boys finished with 39 points and the girls with 41.
It was an incredibly impressive show of the Whitman girls’ track abilities. Whitman won the fourth through sixth place spots in the girls’ 3200m. From fourth to sixth, it was sophomore Kinjal Kapoor, sophomore Maya Gros-Slovinska, who also placed within the top 10 in the girls’ 1600m, and freshman Emily Cornelius. Both Gros-Solvinska and Cornelius set new MD 2026 rankings, with Gros-Solvinska now at #26 and Cornelius at #23. Senior Avery Washington also had an outstanding performance, with three top seven times, in the 100m and 200m. She also made a new personal best in the 100m semis, with a time of 12.53.
It wasn’t just the girls who had an exciting meet, as the boys dominated as well. Junior Joao Vitor Andrade ruled all the events he ran, placing fourth in both the 400m and 4x100m. His teammates, sophomore Ryan Pritts, junior Elliot Yeboah and junior Matthew Noone also were exceptional. Senior Gavin Herman had an impressive meet, placing 2nd in both the 110m hurdles and 300m hurdles, cementing himself as the new MD #41 and #19. Junior Jonah Greszler had two strong events as well, coming in 4th place in the boys 3200m with 9:35.47 seconds, a new personal best, and 9th in the boys 1600m with 4:23.29 seconds.
