The girls cross country team won the regional finals by one point, 48-47, over the Northwest Jaguars on Nov. 4.
The Lady Vikes entered the competition fresh off a victory at counties, where they swept all three races. Anna Ryba navigated the muddy course and turned in a strong performance under 20 minutes that earned her first place overall. Alexandra Phillips (4th), Caroline Guiot (7th) and Caroline Elmendorf (12th) all finished less than a minute later.
Laura Elmendorf, Elizabeth Frank and Cara Bennet finished in the top 30 and contributed to the team taking first place overall and winning the regional championship.
The girls will look to capture the state championship crown on Nov. 13 at Hereford High School in Parkton, Maryland which is one of the hardest courses on the east coast.
“In past years we have had strong top runners,” senior runner Danielle Newsham said. “But it’s your entire top seven that wins you a race.”
The strong showing at counties and regionals provided Newsham and the rest of the team with hope for a good performance at states.
“Also the friendship these girls have is really what gives them an advantage,” Newsham said. “Because they know each other’s weaknesses, are able to push each other and encourage each other when they need it the most.”
