The boys’ soccer team (9–0) crushed the Springbrook Blue Devils (1–7) 9–1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Vikes went into this game brewing with confidence after a 7–2 win against Tuscarora the Thursday before their game with Springbrook. This game was one the Vikes felt they could win but they couldn’t relax and underestimate the Blue Devils. The Vikes went into this game to make a statement that they were leagues above the other soccer teams and did just that.
The game started off even between the two teams, until goals from senior Juan Cruz Markarian followed with another by senior Sean Curran, and another by Markarian helped push the Vikes ahead of the Blue Devils in the first half of the game. Springbrook showed no answers to the Vikes’ strong offense and only had one answer for the Vikes defense mustering one goal in the first half, and the only goal they would score throughout the game.
The second half started off the same as the first, only with different faces scoring for the Vikes. With a clear advantage, the Vikes coach Dave Greene decides to take some of his starters off the field making sure no one gets injured before their big game next week. Seniors Sergio Gomez Arias, Alex Sincevich, Sean Curran and junior Ellias Huang Essakali all scored goals in the second half. With Springbrook receiving a red card and having to take one of their players off the field, sophomore Julian Reveiz and junior Pablo Kobeh scored, pushing for the mercy rule to come into play and stopping the game early for the two teams.
The Vikes will face a tough opponent in the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons away on Tuesday night. The Barons are coming off three straight losses, while the Vikes have moved their win streak to nine games. This is another game the Vikes can’t sleep on and need to be prepared for.
