The girls’ flag football team (1–0) defeated Watkins Mill Wolverines (0–1) 38–0 in their first-ever game. MCPS is one of the first counties to pilot this sport, and Whitman started the season off strong on Wednesday night.
Starting on defense, the Vikes were immediately successful. Countless flag pulls broke Watkins Mill’s speed of play on almost every run, with senior Emerson Fezza and junior Anya Campbell pulling many. Junior Mason Miller was a key player in holding off the Wolverines, as they struggled to gain yards. Miller scored the game’s first touchdown, creating a lead for Whitman within minutes.
On the offensive end, the Vikes had outstanding communication, playing in perfect harmony throughout the game. Senior quarterback Aurora McAfee threw long passes to senior Emily Denchfield numerous times, leading to more touchdowns for Whitman. The Vikes continued to dominate throughout the game, and every player on the team was able to hit the field at a certain point.
After the game, the team celebrated the start of this new sport. With the Baltimore Ravens as the main sponsor, Whitman met with wide receiver and Ravens legend Torrey Smith. The Vikes will look to continue their dominant streak next Wednesday against the Wheaton Knights at 6 p.m. at Home.
