Field hockey annihilates Richard Montgomery 9–0 in home opener
September 15, 2022
The field hockey team (2–0) crushed the Richard Montgomery Rockets (2–1) 9–0 in their home opener.
The Vikes started off strong with senior Ellen Ford hitting the back of the net twice, once off a penalty corner. Whitman’s defense stayed strong, not allowing the Rockets anywhere near the net, while junior Ines Foscarini scored the third goal and junior Kiley Kreter scored the fourth. Sophomore Maya Raphael kept the scoreboard operator busy, hitting the back of the net for the Vikes fifth goal of the game. To end the half, junior Helen Kelly scored the sixth goal. Thanks to Whitman’s solid defense and quick-moving offense, Richard Montgomery didn’t get a single shot off.
Coming out of the half, the Rockets defense tried to stop the Vikes from keeping the momentum but Kreter scored the seventh and only goal for Whitman in the third quarter. Junior Sophia Lucci didn’t let Richard Montgomery’s defense stop her and hit the back of the net for the Vikes eighth goal. Ford scored the ninth and final goal of the game, earning herself a hat trick.
Senior Imme Van Den Ham said that even though the Vikes have won their past two games, there still needs to be improvements.
“We have a lot of things to work on, communication being one of them,” Van Den Ham said, “but the overall result showed that we are playing well.”
The Vikes dominated the Rockets in nearly every aspect, resulting in the 9–0 blowout to remain undefeated. The Vikes will look to keep the winning streak going on Monday when they host the Wootton Patriots (3–0) at 7 pm.
