The Landon School hosted a “Soup n’ Bowls” fundraiser Oct. 17 for Brainy Camps, an organization that sends children to sleep away camp for a week with other kids who share their disease.
Participants in the fundraiser paid $25 to enter the event, where they received a bowl hand-painted by a camper filled with soup from one of multiple participating Bethesda restaurants.
“The campers worked so hard on the bowls,” Brainy Camps’ Susan Mehlman said. “We were very excited to donate them for such an important cause.”
Participants could also buy raffle tickets to win prizes like restaurant gift cards and art classes.
In addition to hosting the event, Landon donated bowls that students created during pottery class. At the fundraiser, Landon students served soup and greeted people alongside Brainy Camps employees.
There are seven Brainy Camps centers in Maryland and Virginia, and each location focuses on a different disease. The camps, originally created for children and teens with epilepsy, now include diabetes, neurofibromatosis, Asperger’s syndrome, Sickle Cell Anemia and Tourette’s syndrome. By the end of this year, Brainy Camps will set up camps for obesity and Down syndrome
