Say goodbye to your monthly dose of “how to make popcorn taste upscale” and “where to get the best meat in the Dominican Republic” because 68-year-old Gourmet
magazine is no more.
Condé Nast Publications (home of the New Yorker, Vogue and Vanity Fair) announced that it was killing Gourmet on Oct. 5 due to the economic downturn. Also leaving newsstands are Modern Bride and Elegant Bride, the bibles to planning the big day and parent magazine Cookie. Gourmet’s epicurean sister title, Bon Appétit, will still be available.
Gourmet’s shut down is the latest example of the failing print journalism industry. Condé Nast blamed the decision to end the publications on the poor economy and lack of advertisers. In a press release from Oct. 5, the media giant’s CEO Chuck Townsend said, “In this economic climate, it is important to narrow our focuses to titles with the greatest prospects for long-term growth.”
The highly respected Gourmet will print its legendary Thanksgiving issue as its last in November. Cookie will also publish its final issue next month, while production of Modern Bride and Elegant Bride has been ceased immediately.
