Spring athletes honored with Chichester awards

The Britton N. Chichester award winners were announced Thursday May 7.

Every season, a senior on each team who exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship, dedication, and leadership earns the award. This person is not necessarily the star player, but instead is someone that the other players look up to.

The award is named for Britton Chichester, a three-sport athlete who died in a car accident his senior year. Chichester was not the star of any of his teams but was a dedicated team-player. His family founded the award in his honor and presented the award to the winners for several years.

The winners receive a paper award and a letter. They used to receive a monetary gift as well, but since those types of rewards are now not allowed, they don’t get the additional prize.

The Chichester award is different from most other awards in that the teammates are the ones who decided the winner. Each person has a single vote and they can vote for any senior on the team.

This year’s spring sports winners are as follows:

• Girls Lacrosse—Sarah Craig

• Boys Lacrosse—Spencer Sallee

• Girls Track and Field—Christina Eidi

• Boys Track and Field—Kemal Talen

• Softball—Corinne Aherne

• Baseball—Daniel Shannahan

• Boys Tennis—Evan Burnes

• Coed Volleyball—Spiros Vonortas

• Boys Volleyball—James Yeh
