A rainbow of chalk dust on the asphalt ground was all that remained at RFK Stadium Saturday Sept. 5 after the annual Color Vibe run.
Just before the race, hundreds of enthusiastic participants lined up, their clothes still white, ready to begin the epic countdown. After the run began, the course led runners around the outside of the stadium, through the parking lots and eventually under the metro line. Four color stations stood throughout the course where volunteers threw a variety of blue, pink and green cornstarch all over the passing runners.
“I was excited to get a new color all over my clothes, and it was amazing because everything was super vivid—I’d never experienced something like that before,” junior Emma Li said. “I ran into the color station with my arms wide open.”
Runners danced and cheered as they crossed the finish line, their shirts bursting with color. At the after party, a color throw took place every fifteen minutes where runners ripped open color packets given to them by Naradah Tisdel, or DJ Tantrum, who played upbeat music throughout the event. On his count, they let the powder fly, creating massive clouds of vibrant hues that sprinkled across the audience.
In addition to the color packets, DJ Tantrum also handed out necklaces and t-shirts, all while mixing music for an audience whose enthusiasm never ceased to impress him.
“The DC crowd was awesome and there was so much energy. These guys are crazy,” DJ Tantrum said.
After the 5K and dance, runners were able to eat at various food trucks, including Holy Crepes and DC Slices. A portion of the proceeds were donated to local charities.
“People love the race because they think it’s a super fun time. Anyone can participate, young or old, even if you want to walk through it,” merchandise head of the event Baylee Jensen said.
