MCPS announced Monday that the school year will be extended one day to June 15 due to seven snow days this school year. Four additional days are built into the MCPS calendar to allow for four snow days. Acting superintendent Larry Bowers requested a waiver to only make up one of the three extra snow days.
Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Lillian Lowery granted the County two of the three requested days, meaning MCPS will have two days less than the 180 required days. Last year, the school year was extended two days thanks to numerous snow days.
Extending the year three days would have cost MoCo close to $2 million, according to an MCPS press release. Bowers originally submitted a waiver to get all three days off March 17 but Bowers revised the waiver when the State Board expressed a desire for schools to make up at least some of the missed instructional time.
