Congressman Chris Van Hollen awarded 12 Whitman students with Congressional recognition for excellence in the arts at the Strathmore Mansion, April 26.
Two hundred high school students submitted paintings, drawings and photographs to the competition and a panel of jurors selected 84 pieces to be displayed at the mansion.
Five Whitman students received honorable mention for their work, six were runners-up and freshman Sydney Markus received the Jane E. Lawton Memorial award for her oil painting “Latisha.”
Markus, along with three other students, will have her work displayed in one of Hollen’s offices.
Senior Gabby Mahdesian had her oil painting of a little girl on a swing chosen for the competition.
“I was really excited because I had some friends there to support me,” Mahdesian says. “It was like my introduction into the art world.”
