Fashion show 2013: Secret Garden
May 4, 2013
The entrance to the auditorium was transformed by an archway wrapped in tiny light bulbs in order to fit the “Secret Garden” theme of the Fashion Society’s 14th annual Fashion Show May 3. Student designers had worked on their collections for months before showcasing them at the club’s culminating event Friday.
Before the show, designers and models did a run-through under the direction of club sponsor Danielle Fus. When they weren’t onstage, models and designers could be found in the green room doing hair and makeup, taking selfies, eating pizza or behind the auditorium having their pictures taken in their designers’ elegant creations.
The show began at 7:30 p.m. as the two hosts, senior Jonathan Poffley and junior Jorge Richardson, strutted out in suits to Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get it On.” The hosts lightened up the event with humorous comments between each line.
Each designer had a unique inspiration for her line. Junior Maelle Perez said she was inspired by hippies and San Francisco when creating her line. Each model wore a daisy in her hair and a majority of them modeled floral maxi dresses. Perez fittingly chose the song “One Love” by Bob Marley as the song playing in the background during her line’s presentation.
Sophomore Lex Payne’s line had a distinctive Asian inspiration.
“I’ve always liked Asian fabric since I was a kid,” Payne said. “I found some inexpensive ones online, and I decided to use them.”
Junior Rolanda Wang, who modeled for junior Sarah Hoffman, was proud of her designer’s original creations.
“I love Sarah’s line, its so different,” Wang said. “It was very dark and mysterious.” The theme of Hoffman’s line was Gladiators and Goddesses.
The last three lines of the show were those of the club’s presidents, seniors Talia Levinas, Ashley Azmoodeh and Jessica Atkinson. Atkinson, who hopes to continue fashion in college, said she was sad that her fashion show experience was coming to a close.
“I’m really excited, but it’s also really bittersweet”, Atkinson said. “I think the quality of the collections overall has really improved over the last four years.”
